Dear readers,

Have you ever wondered: what on Earth can I buy to that person? Whether that’s a friend, a colleague, a person you know but you are not sure how well or a family member who already has everything they need, we’ve all been there. It’s tough because you do want to buy them a present, you respect them and you love them, after all. However, you don’t want that to be awkward and you don’t want to throw your money at something they don’t like or they won’t appreciate.

If you are feeling quite doubtful about it all then don’t worry, I’m here to help. I’ll share with you my ideas of the witty presents anyone will love!

Most of us during winter will use a scarf, a hat or a pair of gloves. And most of us forget to buy a new pair because hey, we already have the pair we bought… how many years ago? I don’t remember. Plus, think about it: most of my hat and gloves sets were gifted to me by my parents or my friends. I have a wonderful white Champions scarf and hat that my father bought for me and it’s one of the winter accessories I’m the proudest of. I’m sure it will be the same for most of you as well so don’t underestimate the power of gloves.

Most importantly, nowadays you can find some quite neutral pair of gloves, scarves and hats at a good price for decent quality. If you are not sure about the taste, just go for black or light grey, nothing too sparkling or bold. The best thing is that if they don’t like your present, they can easily find someone who will.

Fancy chocolate looks very expensive and it usually is, but it is not as expensive as most Christmas presents. It’s also one of those things we never buy at the supermarket because it almost feels like a crime but we would like to have a bite! And you know what: if your special person already has a bar at their place, it’s fine, chocolate bars last a whole year and it doesn’t take that long to finish one!

Buying three bars of fancy chocolate will make someone’s tummy very happy indeed. Just make sure they actually like chocolate (maybe by offering them a praline beforehand or by sharing an Instagram photo of a very chocolaty snack).

Who said that jewellery has to be expensive or impersonal? Look at brands such as Micheal Calvin, Folli Follie, Astrid and Miyu or Ted Baker and you’ll find fine jewellery at an affordable price. A jewel is one of those presents that no-one expects to receive but everyone dreams of. It can just be a pair of earrings or a simple bracelet, you don’t have to buy the whole set to make someone smile.

Again, talking from personal experience, I’m very fond of the jewellery I was gifted. It’s a constant reminder of the person who gave it to me, even when they are not physically there in my everyday life any longer. It is a way to feel connected to someone without them being there every hour of your day.

If we are talking about grownups, alcohol will always be appreciated. From wine to whiskey, from coffee liquor to Aperol, it will never be a bad option. You can never have enough at home and again, if your special someone doesn’t like it, they can always use it as a gift themselves.

And if you want to have a good laugh, you should consider buying these funny condoms for your wine bottle! I find them hilarious! The perfect gift for someone who loves wine and has a good sense of humour.

I think that for someone who has almost everything they could possibly want, a very nice present would be a good book they can read while, well, on the toilet. Apparently, there’s a very good selection of this genre and while some of them are hilarious, some are actually quite interesting. The ones I would buy are: Games on throne, for the friend who’s addicted to Games of Thrones, How to poo at work, the Mensa brain teasers or 52 things to learn on the loo (that same company also sells a wide collection of similar books, such as the 52 Poodokus to do while you poo and others).

At the end of the day, why should we waste the precious time we waste in the bathroom when we could learn so many things! If you want to take it further, add a cute bookmark and you’re done!

I hate when people give me vouchers that you could use in hundreds of places, excluding those that are close to you. I also find it quite impersonal, I’d rather receive a voucher I can use in a place close to where I live. Therefore, my suggestion would be to do some research and buy a voucher that your friend can use in a place they would normally go to or close to their area.

A couple of years ago my sisters and I bought some vouchers for our parents so that they could go to a couple of cafes close to where we live to enjoy a free breakfast for two. I think that was the present they liked the most! Another idea would be to buy a voucher for a treatment at your friend’s usual beautician. Even if it’s just a manicure, it will be thoroughly appreciated!

Another idea would be to prepare your own vouchers to gift your time to the other person. For example, you can choose to prepare a voucher for a coffee together or a dinner together. I’ve added a couple of useful links below.

My last tip would be to buy a board game, especially if you want to buy a gift for a group of relatives or friends. The best board game for adults I’ve played in the last few years is without any doubts Monopoly Deal. It is a quicker (and way meaner) version of the classic Monopoly game. It only involves cards and it’s quite addictive. I play it with my closest friends whenever I’m back in Italy and we always end up fighting and laughing, it’s brilliant!

Other games you may like are the Royal bingo, for all the friends who are obsessed with the royal family, the game of phones for the tech-addicted or the escape room game. I personally tried only Monopoly Deal but after reading the descriptions of a huge list of games, those are the ones I’d choose.

I hope this unusual gift guide will help you find the perfect present you are looking for, something that will make your loved ones happy and won’t break the bank.

I wish you all some happy shopping!
